'The Proposition' (A Bundy Quicksilver Mystery) - Page 122:

‘You and your pings – I wish I had a ping to tell me when something was going wrong. Have you had this ping – thing, long?’ She asked.
‘All my life – I remember when I first became aware of it; probably when I was about ten years old. At the time my auntie’s dog went missing.’ Bundy explained.
They drove in silence back to the office. Bundy thought of their visit to both places. Either person didn’t want to be one hundred percent co-operative because of the photographs. Were they hiding something?
‘Alright Bundy, what do we do now?’ Kate needed to ask after they sat at their desks.
‘Tell me Kate – I don’t want to sound intrusive, but really, what did you do for eight years investigating the disappearance of Peter Clayton?’ He needed to ask because eight years was a long time for any investigation without a result.
‘We’re all not as good as you are – you know. Like I told you before, I did courses at different places. I went to university. I’ve got two degrees. Look Bundy – I admit it’s a long time trying to find Peter but honestly it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. I feel guilty and incompetent not being able to come up with something. Until you came along I was becoming frantic and to tell the Commissioner of my failings, well, he would have been disappointed. You can see how proud he is at the moment especially after arresting Denis for the murder of Colleen Andersen.’ She was being honest and humble and more than pleased to be working with Bundy Quicksilver.
‘Okay – what about you do your thing about loading those photographs onto the computer and see how the family tree is progressing. I honestly think we’ll be in for a surprise.’ He didn’t exactly know what surprise but he knew something wasn’t gelling into place.

'The Proposition' (A Bundy Quicksilver Mystery) - Page 123:

Kate worked on the computer, ‘have a look at this – even I can see the difference. How did Quincy know this was going to happen?’ She asked and pointed to the screen of the computer. ‘They don’t look anything alike.’
Bundy looked closer at the screen, ‘would you print it out please and send an e-mail to Quincy.’ He instructed.
Bundy studied each face on the family tree. To his eye he couldn’t see a resemblance between Peter and his father, Les. They were different as chalk and cheese. Actually, there was no resemblance whatsoever. Colour of their eyes was different, as were they’re complexions; colour of hair, also shape of their nose with other features clearly identifiable.
‘Kate – can you see what I’m seeing?’ Bundy asked.
‘Even I can see there is no resemblance between Peter and his father. What’s going on?’
‘We need to return to Mary’s house to see if we can have something of her late husband so Quincy can test it for DNA. I’m not a betting man, but I lay you a pound to a London brick on, he’s not the father. We won’t count our chickens yet.’
Kate’s telephone rang.
‘Detective Superintendent Kate Emerson speaking – how can I help you?’ Kate said into the telephone in an official voice.
‘Is Bundy Quicksilver there – may I speak with him please?’ A male voice replied.
‘It’s for you.’ She handed the phone to Bundy.
‘Hello – Bundy Quicksilver speaking.’
‘Detective, you may not remember me, however, many years ago I was present when you obtained a statement from a woman who’d been threatened by a youth with a knife. He was only fourteen years old. I’m Pastor Thrupp.’

'The Proposition' (A Bundy Quicksilver Mystery) - Page 124:

Immediately Bundy’s mind raced through a catalogue of events thinking about a fourteen year old youth who threatened a lady with a knife, ‘ah, yeah, I remember the incident, he broke into her home, she had a baby asleep at the time and he intended to rape her.’ Bundy explained.
‘Yes – you remember. Anyway, I was the Pastor who sat with you and the lady when she gave you a statement for court.’
‘Okay,’ Bundy’s mind tried to compute the connection between taking the statement from the woman, Pastor Thrupp and why he wanted to speak with him, ‘how can I help you Pastor?’ Bundy asked - his brow frowned in wonderment. He shrugged his shoulders to signal Kate he had no idea what this telephone call was about.
‘You and your offsider visited Mrs Peacock this morning; she telephoned me shortly after your visit and when she mentioned your name – it rang a bell. Mrs Peacock wants to speak with you about her grandson Peter and would like me to be present when she does.’
‘Have you any idea what she wants to tell us?’ Bundy asked.
‘Not exactly, she asked me to make arrangements to meet you and Detective Superintendent Emerson; and I’m to be present.’ He replied.
‘When would it be possible to speak with both of you?’ Bundy asked.
‘What say we make an appointment to be at her home at nine o’clock in the morning? She’s old and frail and it’d be better meeting at her home. Would nine o’clock in the morning be a suitable time?’ He asked.
‘Most certainly, see you in the morning.’ Bundy asked and closed Kate’s telephone.

'The Proposition' (A Bundy Quicksilver Mystery) - Page 125:

‘What was that all about?’ Kate asked. She heard part of the conversation but didn’t hear all of it. She was intrigued.
‘That was Pastor Thrupp. He wants us to be at Mrs Peacock’s home at nine o’clock in the morning. Mrs Peacock wants to tell us something about her grandson Peter.’ Bundy explained.
‘Is there anyone you don’t know?’ Kate asked in a gasp.
‘He was the Pastor who sat in on an interview with a witness years ago, when a woman was threatened with a knife by a fourteen year old youth. He remembered my name. I suppose there’s not too many Bundy Quicksilver’s around, are there?’
‘Thank goodness.’ Kate remarked. ‘Now back to this family tree.’
Bundy and Kate studied the family tree comparing each face and features to see if any relative looked similar. Bundy explained to Kate his reason for making this decision. ‘Have you ever been to a wedding or funeral and seen the resemblance of different family members? How their features resemble one another through their skin colour, hair, facial features and other similarities?’ Bundy asked.
‘Now you mention it – yes, but I’ve never taken any notice. Did Quincy know about this?’ Kate asked.
‘No – this was my idea. Look at the difference between Mary and Peter, each have similar coloured hazel eyes; Peter’s feature of nose; mouth and cheeks had a slight resemblance to his grandfathers’ features. Apart from those small resemblances; Peter stuck out like a sore thumb; he appears to be a throw back in the family some where. Do you agree?’ Bundy asked.

Thank you mzawf for your kind thanks: here is the page for today: 'The Proposition' (A Bundy Quicksilver Mystery) - Page 126:

‘Yeah – I suppose.’ Kate wondered, ‘I’ve never investigated anything like this before. It’s normally facts we look for – not family resemblances.’
‘You never know Kate – this could be a new way of investigating.’ Bundy smiled.
Nine o’clock the following morning Kate and Bundy arrived at Mrs Peacock’s home. They were surprised to see Mary present who greeted them at the front door, ‘do come in. Mom and I have something which may help you find Peter.’ She smiled and guided the two into the house.
‘Good morning Mrs Peacock, here is the photograph you gave us; and you must be Pastor Thrupp?’ Kate asked and looked at the Pastor.
‘I’m pleased to meet you, yes, I’m Pastor Thrupp and you are.’ He cut short what he was going to say.
‘Pastor Thrupp, it’s wonderful to see you again, this is Detective Superintendent Kate Emerson. Actually you haven’t aged a bit since I last saw you.’ Bundy extended his hand to the Pastor. He had trouble remembering the Pastor. It was long ago since he last saw him.
‘Neither have you – I hope the man up stairs doesn’t mind if we share this moment between us.’ Pastor Thrupp joked and pointed a finger skyward.
‘I’m certain he’ll understand.’ Bundy smiled.
‘Would you like a cup-of-tea or coffee?’ Mary asked.
‘Cup-of-tea would be wonderful thanks Mary, and flat white for Kate.’ Bundy replied with a grin. Normally it was Kate who ordered the drinks.
‘Have a seat.’ Mrs Peacock showed the others to the lounge room.
‘I’ll begin, if you like.’ Pastor Thrupp said. ‘After your visit yesterday Mrs Peacock telephoned me at my parish to ask if I would visit her at her home. I often call in

to provide her communion and prayers. She wants to share something she told me yesterday.’ Pastor Thrupp stated.
Bundy and Kate sat silent waiting for Mrs Peacock to commence, ‘shall we wait for Mary to deliver morning tea before we start?’ She opened the conversation.
‘By all means, take your time.’ Kate emphasised, without anyone knowing she activated her mobile telephone to record their conversation.
Mary joined the group, handed out refreshments and took a seat beside her mother.
‘Why I wanted Pastor Thrupp here this morning is because Mary and I have something to say which has been a heavy burden to carry for many years.’ Mrs Peacock said.
‘Mom, perhaps it might be better if I told the story.’ Mary requested. Her mother nodded.
‘Yesterday when you asked to take our photographs, after you left mom’s home, I telephoned her to see if you took her photograph. When she told me you hadn’t taken one and she’d given you a photograph of dad and her which was taken years ago, it wouldn’t take much for the both of you to put two and two together and come up with five.’ Mary said.
‘We did see a difference between Peter and his father, if it’s what you mean.’ Kate interrupted.
‘Les is not Peter’s father.’ Mary began to sob, tears filled her eyes. She took a tissue from inside her bra to wipe her eyes. ‘I don’t know who Peter’s father is – honestly, I mean, I don’t know his name. It was twenty-two years ago.’ Mary bravely stated.
Kate and Bundy looked at one another, ‘okay - this is strange; many thoughts are spinning through my mind at the moment. You’ll need to be more specific Mary. Can you tell us anything about Peter’s father?’ Bundy asked.
‘I had a fling – a one night stand and next I knew I was pregnant with Peter. Les never knew, he always

thought he was Peter’s father. We met a couple of days after I knew I was pregnant; I never told him about the fling or who Peter’s father was. He always thought he was Peter’s father until the day he died.’ Mary explained.
‘Wow – this certainly opens a can of worms. Is there anything you can tell us about his identity?’ Bundy asked.
‘Do you think he could have taken Peter?’ Mary asked.
‘We have no idea. If you can give us more information which could help us, we’d appreciate it.’ Kate asked.
‘I’ll tell you the whole story. I went to the Brisbane Exhibition one night on my own. Mom, dad and I always went when I was growing up. I was fascinated with the trots. I loved to see the horses’ race. We’d pick a number on a horse to watch race.’ She looked to her mother for support. Mrs Peacock smiled in agreement.
‘What happened when you went alone to the Brisbane Exhibition?’ Kate asked, ‘on your own.’
‘I sat in the grandstand to watch the trots as we usually did. This time I sat close to the front to get a better look at the drivers. They looked handsome in their coloured helmets and racing colours. One of the male drivers pulled his horse up in front of where I was seated and got off the gig to check gear on the horse. He looked at me and our eyes met. I couldn’t believe he looked at me.’ Mary replied feeling ashamed of her admissions.
‘Go on.’ Kate interrupted.
‘After the race was over the same driver stopped in front of me, came over and handed me a blue ribbon he’d won. He won the race. I didn’t know what to do. Stars sparkled in my eyes, I went limp in my knees when he handed me the ribbon. All I could say was ‘thank you.’
